“Per the rules of the checkpoint, of those 375 vehicles that went through the checkpoint, CHP made contact with 226 of them,” said Josh Greengard, public information officer for the California Highway Patrol-Newhall. “A couple of people were pulled out of their cars because they said they had been drinking, but after the field sobriety tests, they were deemed okay to drive.”

There were no arrests made or citations issued on the Old Road Friday night, but officers have still deemed the checkpoint a success.

“The goal of the DUI Checkpoint is to create awareness among the motoring public, to deter
people from driving under the influence, and to keep the streets safe for all,” said a CHP news release. “Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable.”

Friday’s checkpoint is the second time this month the Newhall CHP office has made this kind of coordinated effort to screen for impaired drivers, according to officials. Both checkpoints this month have been at the same location on the Old Road.

“This is the second one we’ve done this month for the Newhall CHP office, and it’s an educational tool that Highway Patrol uses to show the dangers of driving under the influence,” said CHP Newhall Officer Eric Priessman. “It reminds drivers that we are out here, and if we’re not out here in a checkpoint like this, we are out on patrol looking for impaired drivers of all kinds.”

The frequency of the checkpoints are predicated upon the availability of federal funds, through grants, which are sought to pay for the operations, according to officials.
