“The idea is simple — Elks Riders from each state will hold a charity run rally on Saturday, April 14 and all proceeds collected go directly to a brain injured children’s charity/family/cause in their area,” said a Elks Rider Lodge press release.

The “Elks Bikers Rally for Brain Injured Children,” event is set to have a motorcycle ride, a raffle, live music, a barbecue lunch and other family fun activities.

This is the 15th annual event that is put on nationwide, however, this is the first time Elks Riders Lodge 2379 in Santa Clarita is participating.

“This is the first year that the Santa Clarita Elks Rider Lodge has had a riding chapter,” said personal assistant Deana Princiotta with the Santa Clarita Elks Riders Lodge.

Each year the different chapters either adopt a brain injury facility or a family with a relative who has a brain injury to sponsor.

The Santa Clarita Elks Riders Lodge has chosen to raise money for the Huss family.

Olivia Huss, 1 1/2 years old was diagnosed with a rare heart condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). She was born with only half a heart.

Due to her diagnosis 36 hours after birth she suffered a severe lack of oxygen to her brain resulting in right brain damage and underdeveloped white matter.

After two open heart surgeries and four stomach surgeries Olivia is doing very well health wise.

Olivia is scheduled for another heart surgery when she turns 4-years-old.

Olivia was also recently diagnosed with cerebral palsy caused from the brain damage.

The infant’s brain damage has also affected her sight, the ability to use the left side of her body and the ability to eat normally.

Olivia currently has to use a feeding tube to consume all food, water and medications, but is working on being able to eat by mouth.

The infant is receiving therapy four times a week and sees seven different specialists to help her fight through her challenges.

Due to all the infant is going through she needs lots of support, and it has resulted in both of her parents not being able to work.

As much as the Huss Parentsfeel blessed and grateful, it has been very difficult financially.

“Worrying about a child’s health and how to pay the gas bill is something no family should have to go through,” officials said.

Olivia’s older sister, Alex, a senior in high school has suffered the most from the financial strain, according to officials.

She has missed out on many opportunities and is hoping to receive a scholarship to be able to attend college.

Despite the financial strain Olivia’s family feels grateful everyday, “Everyday is a gift to build memories as a family.,” said the Huss family.

This event is open to whomever would like to ride in the event or to come raise money for the Huss family.

“Anyone who has a Honda civic, an old classic car, or a motorcycle is invited to come participate in the rally,” said Princiotta.

The event cost $25 per driver and $10 per passenger.

The rally is scheduled for April 14, 2018, and is expected to start at 9 a.m. The motorcycle ride is set to begin at 10 a.m. and the barbecue, raffle and live music is set to start at 1:30 p.m.

The Elks Riders Lodge is located at 17766 Sierra Highway in Canyon Country.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
