The fake crash, designed to combat drunk driving and educate high school-aged students on the consequences of driving under the influence, used real students to highlight how anybody can be involved in a drunk driving incident.

Taking place over a two day period, “Every 15 Minutes” organizes a small group of students to perform in reenactments and presentations that showcase the immediate and long-term consequences of irresponsible driving.

Eric Aubrey was one of the “living dead victims” claimed by the volunteer Grim Reaper in class.

“My brother did it two years ago, said Aubrey. “My brother had a friend that was lost to drinking and driving. They fell victim because someone else was drinking and driving …. It can affect so many people.”

Principal Vince Ferry urged his students to pay attention to their emotional response to the graphic presentation, asking them to remember what they heard and saw during the crash.

“This is one of the most important days we have talking about drinking and driving,” Ferry said after addressing the students. “I think that Every 15 Minutes does exceptionally well. It brings this reality to them without having to experience it first hand.”

On Friday morning, the students gathered in the Saugus gym for an assembly with parents of children who were “killed” during the two day presentation. Additionally, other parents whose children have been killed in drunk driving crashes addressed the students.

“It’s not just a little 30 minute crash scene. It’s a whole real life scenario,” said Officer Greengard, Newhall CHP, whose office supports Every 15 Minutes. “I think it shows (teens) a real life scenario, that they get immersed into, and it shows them first hand the real life experience.”
