The event started at 7 a.m. with a Volunteer Rally and Commemoration Ceremony. Volunteers who had signed up ahead of time were given the opportunity to turn in their waivers, receive their t-shirt, meet their team leaders, and participate in the ceremony.
Volunteers also received breakfast at the event, including bagels, fruit and water.
During the ceremony itself, several first responders spoke about their memories of 9/11, as well as the importance of volunteering in the community.
Near the end of the ceremony, a moment of silence was called for, followed by the sounding of sirens from emergency response vehicles, signalling the “end of watch” for the first responders who lost their lives during the 9/11 attack.
Following the ceremony, the 300 volunteers in attendance were then sent out to their chosen site where they helped complete service projects including painting, cleaning and landscaping.
