The “Heads Up! Teen Video Contest” is looking for young filmmakers to submit 30 to 60 second videos that emphasize the importance of distraction-free driving for teenagers, according to officials.

“Learning to drive for teens can be a life-changing experience, but not always in the best way,” a statement on the city’s website reads. “Reckless driving can lead to deadly accidents.”

The top three videos are set to win a share of $10,000 worth of prizes, according to city officials.

The creator of the first place video is set to receive a $5,000 gift card to B&H, as well as have their video played in movie theaters across Santa Clarita for five weeks. Second place is set to earn a $2,000 gift card, and third place is set to be awarded a $500 gift card, according to officials.

The “Heads Up! Teen Video Contest” is a part of the “Heads Up!” campaign launched by the City of Santa Clarita and L.A. County Sheriff’s Department in order to combat unsafe behaviors in drivers and pedestrians, according to the campaign’s website.

“It is very disappointing that we continue to see a prevailing attitude of ‘do as I say, not as I do,’ where large numbers of motorists seem to recognize the risks of certain behaviors but do them anyway,” said Peter Kissinger, President and CEO for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. “Enhancing the safety culture in society must begin with each individual.”

Submissions are due on April 30 by 5 p.m. Interested participants can apply to the contest by calling Nick Robles at (661) 255-4306 or by email at nrobles@santa-clarita.com.
