The CMS rates hospitals across the country based on six different categories, each with their own subcategories. The categories include a survey of patients experiences, effective and timely care, complications and deaths, unplanned hospital visits, effective use of medical imaging and payment and value of care.

“This is a significant accomplishment and a great testament to our employees and our medical staff,” said Roger E. Seaver, president and CEO at Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital.  “Our community deserves great care and the hard work put forth by everyone on our staff to deliver this great care is paying off.”

The advent of 2018 also brings new partnerships to Henry Mayo such as the hospitals newfound relationship with the Daisy Award Foundation — a recognition program for nurses. Nominations can be made by any individual and are available to RNs and LVNs who provide direct patient care.

Nominations can be submitted at the hospital or on their website.

However, these newfound accomplishments and partnerships that will benefit Henry Mayo in 2018, are only possible due to the work done by the Santa Clarita medical institution last year.

On Dec. 19 the first ever Light up a Life ceremony took place outside the hospital in the Sandness Courtyard. The ceremony was a way of honoring and celebrating those who have died.

“The ceremony was very meaningful and incredibly moving to us,” said Betty Burke Oldfield, a long time hospital supporter, who attended the event with her granddaughter Layne Latorre.  “It meant so much to be able to honor our loved ones in such a beautiful way.” Oldfield celebrated the life of her late son Jimmy Burke, who passed away in 1979 at nineteen years old.

All the attendees were given candles to light up as the names of everyone being remembered was read aloud, including names of hospital employees, community leaders, friends and family of the staff and many other.

Other events such as the teddy bear donation and the Henry Mayo Activities Team’s program to help patients families in need during the holidays also took place. Over 157 teddy bears were donated to the emergency room for the pediatric patients, and 36 families received presents during the holidays.
