Construction began at the beginning of June of this year, a project undertaken in order to replace the former bridge that officials stated had become a hazard to both pedestrians and drivers below.

“The timber bridge, which was decayed and aging, has been replaced with a new, pre-fabricated steel truss bridge,” said a news release from city officials.

Similarly to its predecessor, the new steel bridge is located between Gamble House Court and Arroyo Park Drive, adjacent to Valencia Summit Park, and is designed to accommodate those residents traveling on the city’s Paseo network.

“The project is part of the City’s commitment to sustaining public infrastructure and results in a safer and sturdier bridge for pedestrians crossing this portion of McBean Parkway,” continued the news release.

This is not the first pedestrian bridge Santa Clarita officials have worked to improve this year. Also in June of this year, officials closed down a portion of Soledad Canyon to install a steel truss pedestrian bridge, connecting the Metrolink station and Villa Metro development.

In addition to the pedestrian bridge projects, Santa Clarita officials also began construction in early May of this year for the Newhall Ranch Road Bridge expansion project. The multi-million dollar project will widen the bridge over the San Francisquito Creek, providing an additional lane in each direction, a raised median and a protected sidewalk and bike trail, according to a city news release.

Other additions to the bridge will include new street lights, a bus turnout on the south side of the road and a San Francisquito Creek Trail gap connection in the west bank below the bridge.
