Golden Valley High senior Shayna Behrens was named the winner for her white charcoal drawing of Lucille Ball, titled “Timeless.”

“I grew up watching ‘I Love Lucy’ and loving Lucille Ball’s work,” saidBehrens. “Lucille Ball was known for her endless comedy in Hollywood, but in my portrait I captured the side of her that few know about.”

Behrens entered the contest to challenge herself as her time at Golden Valley High School draws to a close.

“I just wanted to end my high school career strong and win an art contest,” said Behrens.

Her portrait was selected out of 25 photo and drawing entries from students across Santa Clarita. Last year’s winner, Rachel Tahir, was also present for the event, and reflected on her experience when she won.

“It was cool because it was a whole group of high schoolers from around the country that were there seeing their photos for the first time in the Capitol,” said Tahir.

Each year, the winner of the Congressional Art Award has their art displayed in the nation’s Capitol for the next year. The winner is also flown out to Washington D.C. to see their work displayed with other winners from across the country.

“It’s something that the community can come out and see the kind of art and expertise that we’ve got in this area,” said Congressman Knight.

  1. Thank you for helping to heighten my granddaughter’s self-esteem. Her life has been challenging, if not difficult. Art has provided a healthy outlet for her.
