Five CHP officers and one sergeant manned the checkpoint, which checked for drunk driving and drivers license violations on the northbound side of The Old Road, north of Constitution Avenue.
While officials informed the public that the checkpoint would be in place anytime from 6:30 p.m. Friday night to 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, officials actually conducted the DUI checkpoint from 8 p.m. Friday night to 1 a.m. Saturday morning, according to Officer Eric Priessman, a spokesperson for the CHP Newhall office.
During the night, 467 vehicles came through the checkpoint, and while 11 evaluations were conducted, no arrests were made, Priessman said.
Even though arrest totals do not rise dramatically during checkpoints, the psychological influence a checkpoint has on the motoring public is invaluable, CHP officials said.
Sobriety checkpoints are conducted in accordance with the guidelines for checkpoint operations outlined in the Supreme Court decision, Ingersol vs. Palmer.
Traffic volume permitting, all vehicles are checked. If traffic volume becomes too heavy, vehicles to be checked are selected by a pre-set standard, such as every fifth or 10th vehicle, in order to assure objectivity.
