Reports of the missing duck feeders started to appear on social media Saturday afternoon.

They removed the duck food at Bridgeport,” one resident wrote on the Santa Clarita Community Facebook page. “Does anyone know if we are allowed to bring our own cheerios or if this was a hint to stop feeding them altogether?”

The feeders were not one Bridgeport Home Owner’s Association property, but across the street at Valencia Marketplace, according to Russell Hoffman, president of  Valencia Management Group.

By 1 p.m. Sunday, over 30 comments had amassed on the Facebook thread regarding the status of the duck feeders and the proper food for the birds.

Ducks can safely consume corn, lettuce and other greens, frozen peas, oats, seeds and duck pellets, commonly found online and in pet stores.

But posted signs in the Bridgeport community explicitly asked residents and visitors not to feed the ducks. Wildlife advocates encourage residents to avoid feeding wildlife because the practice can cause overcrowding in areas where ducks congregate and can have negative impacts on the ducks themselves, including disease, delayed migration and lack of foraging.

Despite rumors of the feeders being stolen, representatives from FPK Security, the private security group that patrols Bridgeport, and officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station confirmed they had not received any reports of theft regarding the missing containers, or complaints about them from residents.

  1. This article seems to conflate Bridgeport Marketplace with Bridgeport Community. The latter does not permit duck feeding, as the photo of the sign shows. At the Marketplace, however, duck feeding has always been encouraged. I’ve been feeding the ducks Cheerios (which are 100% oats and perfectly fine for them) since the place opened. The ducks (and turtles) love them, and there’s never been any apparent negative effect on their health, migratory habits, etc. The food dispensed by the machines there (which was the equivalent of Cheerios) was hopelessly overpriced, anyway, and good riddance. So, bring your own Cheerios (or, better still, an organic equivalent) and show the ducks a little love!

  2. That was what my question was going to be about. Is this the Bridgeport Valencia residential community or is this the Bridgeport Marketplace which is across the street?
