Every year, the One Story One City initiative encourages discussion amongst Santa Clarita residents and promotes reading across all ages through the use of one story.

This year’s selected story is the science fiction novel “Ready Player One,” by Ernest Cline. In the book, main character Wade Watts attempts to escape his grim situation by searching for three keys in the virtual world known as OASIS, which would give him access to a vast fortune.

Residents looking to participate in the event can pick up a copy of “Ready Player One” at their local Santa Clarita Public Library branch, or purchase the book through the program partner, Valencia Barnes & Noble, officials said.

Public book discussions will be held at all library branches. Residents are also invited to participate in several  “Ready Player One”-themed events

On Thursday, March 8, all three library branch locations are inviting the community to play retro games on  full sized arcade cabinets, according to city officials.

Participants are also invited to try virtual reality on Friday, March 2, at 4 p.m. at the Valencia Library; Tuesday, March 20, at 4 p.m. at the Canyon Country Library; and Monday, March 26, at 4 p.m. at the Old Town Newhall Library.

The “It’s Like, Totally Rad” Art Gallery and Reception will present artwork inspired by the book and the 1980s. According to officials, the event will include appetizers, entertainment and opportunities to meet the artists. The event is set for Saturday, Mar. 3, at 6 p.m. in the First Floor Gallery at City Hall.

Over the course of the month, residents can also complete a self-guided scavenger hunt that will quiz their “Ready Player One” knowledge at all Santa Clarita Public Library branches. Participants will be entered into a drawing for “Ready Player One” movie tickets.
