Owen Patterson & Owen Demands USC Make Reparations, Cautions Victims

A founding partner for Owen Patterson & Owen, Rick Patterson, said last week that USC needs to take more accountability for the scandal revolving around Dr. George Tyndall — the university’s resident gynecologist accused of assaulting his patients.

Since reports regarding Tyndall sexually assaulting and harassing his patients at the USC Student Health Center broke, hundreds of women have come forward to share their accounts and trauma.

In the days immediately following the first revelations, USC set up a hotline specifically for the victims of the the school gynecologist for these women to “share” their experiences or concerns.

“Ensuring the well-being of our students is at the very core of our academic community,” a statement from school administrators reads. “We are committed to the transparency, appropriate action and accountability that our community deserves.”

But according to Patterson, the founding partner of Owen Patterson & Owen — the Santa Clarita based law firm representing a number of these victims — this is the school inviting these traumatized women back into the “lion’s’ den.”

“USC is using this hotline as an opportunity to invite these victims back into the ‘lion’s’ den’ and find out everything about them through their own testimony and statement without the benefit of legal counsel,” Patterson said. “So, if you feel USC is reaching out to be kind, and helpful, be aware.”

Patterson argued that not only should the school not be asking women to share their testimonies without a lawyer present, but that the university should accept full liability if they are interested in taking the “great care” they claim to provide for all of Tyndall’s victims.

In addition to financial restitution, these women are entitled to guarantees that this will never happen again; that USC has taken concrete steps to ensure that the trauma experienced by these women at the hands of Tyndall does not happen again, according to Patterson.

“One of the common threads that comes through when we interview the victims is that they don’t want this to happen to anyone else ever again,” Patterson said. “What can be done so that this is prevented?”

Owen Patterson & Owen attorneys said that they wish, for the sake of their clients, that the case is concluded quickly, but USC and their insurance companies are the ones who will decide how soon a resolution can be made.

“The fact is that USC was aware of this man’s bizarre and illegal behavior and yet they acted in a way that sought to protect only themselves,” Patterson said.

  1. Im very greatful your firm is standing up to this nasty school! They have destroyed the lives of numerous members of the so called “Trojan Family”. I’m a member of a “protected class” who inadvertently became a target of ruthless USC academic mobbing campaign. Not only was their behavior unethical, it was blatantly illegal. I begged and pleaded with USC to resolve my situation amicably, but they refused. Although they knew they we’re liable, they didn’t believe I would be willing or able to defend myself. How depressing! Please, nail these awful people!
