The Paseo Club was initially scheduled to host one day of the Coastal Swimming Championships on Sunday, Jan. 14. However, due to recent devastation from floods that ravaged the Santa Barbara area, the club’s coaches, parents, and volunteers all gathered together to step up and host an entire two-day event instead.

The Paseo Aquatics Club themselves finished in third place in the Gold Group, but managed to place first in both the Silver and Bronze Groups.

“The Southern California Swimming Coastal Committee saw first-hand the incredible job Paseo Aquatics did at hosting this Championship meet,” said Paseo Aquatics Head Coach Chris Dahowski. “We expect more to come! Our entire coaching staff is simply amazing. They did such a great job at Coastal Championships words cannot express how I feel about them.”

Other highlights from the meet included the following:

  • In the 7-10 age group. Viktoria Paragas swam her first-ever 200 IM in competition.
  • The 11-12 Boys & Girls relay team headlined by Luke Bezanilla, Daniel Jo, Nolan Hill, Adam Meldrum, Teia Salvino, Sydney Zancanaro, Anika Sta. Maria, and Ariel Kellum.
  • Sydney Zancanaro swam 13 events and was the highest point scorer in the 12 year-old age group over the course of the weekend.
  • In the 13-14 age group, Bryant Lee was Paseo’s weekend warrior. “He was one of the few swimmers who was asked to do everything,” Paseo Coach Daiki Sato said of Lee, who swam in the 200 Fly, 200 Back and 200 Breast.
  • In the 15 & Over category, Paseo welcomed Orion Vayanas, who recently joined the Paseo team. He broke the Paseo Open 100 IM record with a time of 57.07, previously held by Daniel Jo.
  • Swimmers Rijker Hutson, Leo Melaye, Joseph Park, Alyssa Hamilton, Ted Kang, Ryan Tanis, and Nicole Whitehead were cited for taking the 10 & Under Paseo swimmers under their wing during the meet.

Coach Dahowski said in a few short weeks, the Southern California Swimming All-Star Festival will take place for the ages 11-12 & 13-14. “I am super proud of the quality and character of athletes we are developing,” Dahowski said. “It’s obvious that our staff and culture is working. It will just take time for the word to spread.”
