On the morning of March 17, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints arrived at three different locations across the Santa Clarita Valley spreading mulch in the planters along busy roadways.

“In the last couple of years, we’ve had a big emphasis on doing bigger scale projects that are more noticeable to the whole community so that it hopefully gets other people encouraged to do the same kind of service,” said Brett Singley, a member of the church. “We organize this as a church, but our whole goal is to get others invited as well.”

Among them were City Councilman Bob Kellar and his wife, Kathy Kellar.

“I was out there with them this morning, and it was really a great morning,” said Councilman Kellar. “It teaches our young people to take pride in their community and city.”

At 8 a.m., participants met in the parking lots of three LDS churches located on Bouquet Canyon, Calgrove and Wiley Canyon, and Ave Stanford in the Industrial Center.

The church has organized many service events and projects over the years, according to Kathy Kellar.

“In years past, we have had yearly service projects which encourages church members along with their families and friends to volunteer with painting, planting, mulching, etc.,” said Kathy. “We have also worked with the Disaster Coalition in rallying our members and Scout Troops last year when the Sand Canyon area suffered mud damage and clean up was needed.”

Councilman Kellar sees these events not only as great opportunities for service, but also as a way to substantially assist the city of Santa Clarita.

“I cannot tell you how much money had been saved by the city through these projects,” said Councilman Kellar.”

When asked why the church put these events on, Kathy had a straightforward answer.

“We love our neighbors, we love our community,” said Kathy.

  1. The area on Bouquet Canyon Road, and Saugus in general has been neglected by the city.
Just having dirt l was unacceptable.
There are many dead trees on the major roads in Saugus.
These conditions do no exist in Valencia.
Since no city council member represents Saugus, I guess the city has to save money for downtown Newhall projects.

  2. I drive down Bouquet to get to work, and the road looks so much better. Big thanks to our friends for their service.
