Morgan is an 18-year veteran of LASD, said Mayor Cameron Smyth, coming to Santa Clarita in 2008. Over the course of his career, Morgan has made over 1,300 DUI related arrests.

“Some of them are from a collision or from an investigation following a collision, but the majority of them are from traffic stops,” said Morgan.

In addition to being honored by community leaders on Tuesday night, Morgan’s Sheriff Station colleagues also presented him with the Century Award, given by anti-drunk driving group Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).

The Century Award recognizes law enforcement officials who have made 100 DUI arrests in a single year. Morgan has received this distinction every year since 2009.

“He’s excellent at spotting drunk driving because he knows exactly what to look for,” said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “We have him doing some regular traffic calls, but his primary focus is finding impaired drivers on the roads.”

But Morgan said even with the high number of arrests he has made, the problem continues in Santa Clarita. With easy access to ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft, drivers should plan ahead.

“People that want to drink need to plan ahead,” said Morgan. “Have a designated driver or use one of the ridesharing services available. Not only can you harm someone else or yourself, but the consequences of a DUI are high fees, having your driver’s license suspended, (and can) even result in you having to pay for an ignition interlock device installed in your car. ”
