“The initial environmental study has been completed and has been posted and is open for public review until the end of (Wednesday), July 19,” said Bill Read, an assistant building official on project team. “Based on that study, we may receive comments from other government agencies or from the public to which we then review and respond accordingly.”

Santa Clarita officials believe that there are no major environmental concerns due to the construction of the new station and that the Mitigated Negative Declaration document can be presented to the City Council for approval by August 22, according to officials.

Following the environmental impact report, which is in compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act, the city has planned to begin moving forward with the project by selecting an architectural firm.

“We are considering a shortlist of three firms that were pre-qualified,” said Read. “They have significant significant experience with these types of facilities.”

After the selection of the architectural company, the city planning team hopes that a design proposal is submitted by August or September of 2018, a formal contractor bid is selected by late 2018, construction begins by 2019, and the station will be ready to occupy by late 2020, according to city officials.

The Sheriff Station’s current facility was built in the 1970s, and is undersized for serving the ever-growing Santa Clarita Valley, according to officials.

“The new Sheriff’s Station itself will be approximately 45,000 square feet, with a 4,000-square-foot vehicle maintenance facility and a heliport which will allow for air activity and response,” said Read. “The current station has a helipad on (the) roof, and we want to ensure that there is no loss in law enforcement’s ability to continue to provide any air support.”

The stand-alone facility on Golden Valley Road was selected due to it’s strategic position and access to servicing the expanding Santa Clarita area.

“The new location is an excellent spot due to the thoroughfare on Golden Valley Road,” said Read. “And the city looks to continue the Via Princessa rode extension and that will further improve access of the station due to its central location.”
