John Wynn and Jeff Johnson, both of Saugus, have moved on to the semifinals in the World Series of Comedy in Las Vegas, competing Saturday night in the Fiesta Room at the El Cortez Hotel.

The World Series of Comedy is a series of weeklong satellite North American contests the U.S. and Canada throughout the year, culminating in a comedy festival in Las Vegas in September, according to the event’s website. The festival includes 101 qualifying comedians competing in The Main Event, as well as an entire week of comedy seminars and social and networking events for comics, comedy club managers and booking agents from the U.S. and Canada.

Self-professed “dark-comic” and Saugus resident since 2015, John Wynn has been competing in the satelitte competitions for five years now waiting for his opportunity to compete in the finals, and finally received it after years of attempts.

“I never know if I have a good shot, but this is the first time I’ve been to the semifinals in five years,” said Wynn. “We’ve got a great lineup of comics, going on tonight with a lot of different styles and material, so it’s going to be a good time.”

Wynn and Johnson are in the top-nine contestants that have moved on to the semifinals, with the top three moving on to the final show at the end of the night. First-, second- and third-place winners receive a 70-week paid performance contract, and the overall champion will receive a recording deal with Uproar Entertainment.

“We’re trying to win work, so this type of competition and environment is the perfect thing for comics and performers,” said Wynn.

Since the competition started in 2010, past winners of the World Series of Comedy have included Erik Knowles, Tamer Kattan, Spencer James, Thai Rivera, Landry, Ryan Dalton and Andrew Norelli.

For Johnson, this competition is not only the opportunity to meet more club owners and increase his chances to get job bookings, but it’s also the culmination of years of hard work.

“I’m nervous and excited for this, but again, this is what I’ve been working towards and the fruits of all my hours of labor and weekends spent away from my family,” said Johnson. “Not only is it a great feeling to be in the final nine of the several hundred people that applied is a really great, but it’s also great In terms of letting people see what you do and to be evaluated by judges.”

Along with traveling and performing at clubs throughout the country for the last six years, Johnson, a 13-year Saugus resident, also hosted and performed at J.R.’s Comedy Club here in Santa Clarita.

“I spent four years honing my craft in the back of Marie Callendar’s, so it’s really the Santa Clarita audiences that prepared me for this,” Johnson said.

The competition being held in the Fiesta Room is not going to be live-streamed or televised, making it difficult for those not in Vegas but still interested in viewing Wynn and Johnson’s performances. However, event organizers plan to announce the winners via social media and the event’s website, and show videos on DVD can be purchased online, as well.
