The second season of MTV’s “Fear Factor” premiered Sunday, and featured two best friends, Anthony Ares and Brittany Hancock, from the Santa Clarita Valley.

Ares and Hancock stood alongside other competitors while show host and “Fast and the Furious” star, Ludacris addresses them.

Ares and Hancock, both 23-year-olds from Castaic, met in the fourth grade, and have been together ever since.

Hancock submitted their applications for Fear Factor about a year ago but said she forgot that she had applied. When the casting producer called, her asking if she and Ares were still interested in appearing on the show, she told him yes without hesitation.

“Growing up watching the show I always said ‘I want to be on that,’” Hancock said.

Her partner was less enthusiastic.

“I made the decision to go ahead and do it because Brittany forced me to” Ares said. “I used to watch (Fear Factor) growing up, and I would never in a million years think that I would have to be on it.”

The show’s episodes put pressure on contestants by forcing them into stressful situations, and forcing them to complete objectives without requesting help. The pair plan to post some behind-the-scenes footage of their experience on YouTube after the season is over.

“The most frightening part about the whole episode is where Anthony and I got buried alive in a coffin together,” Hancock said.

The friends were buried in a coffin together with 100 rats and 100 cockroaches for their first challenge of the season. In pitch-black darkness, they had to remove sticks from the rats’ tails and fashion these sticks together in order to ring a bell outside the coffin.

“I think I wasn’t as scared of the rats in the coffin, but it was the roaches because they bit us,” Hancock said. She said it felt like every part of her was being bit by the hissing cockroaches.

Ares and Hancock won the official “Fear Factor” Twitter poll during the episode, which asked fans who they wanted to win the $50,000 prize. Their team had 72 percent of the vote.

“That is a moment I never want to relive,” Ares said, “especially because rats are my number one fear.”

But the pair succeeded in the challenge, and were able to move on to the next round in the competition.

“It’s a mind game at the end of the day,” said Hancock.

  1. “…buried in a coffin together with 100 rats and 100 cockroaches…”
Sounds like they were attending a CPAC conference.

  2. Correction: they did NOT “succeed in the challenge” and did NOT “move on to the next round in the competition” -they were the lowest time in the buried alive portion and were eliminated.
