Saugus High ‘Boutique Fantastique’ Welcomes Vendors, Customers From Across LA County

Saugus High “Boutique Fantastique,” the school’s annual Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO) fundraiser, gave thousands of local residents the opportunity to peruse the goods of nearly 100 vendors who had set up shop in the school gym on both Saturday and Sunday.

“The PTSO uses this opportunity to raise money for scholarships for seniors that will be graduating in the following year,” said PTSO President Carol Durden. “Because of this event, we’ve given out something close to $90,000 to about 200 students through the years.”

Beginning 28 years ago, the Saugus PTSO began inviting vendors to come rent spaces in the Saugus gym for the weekend, with all proceeds going to scholarships and school supplies for students, according to event organizers.

The vendors consist of not only national chains, but also include individual crafters and student organizations.

“We have national brands with independent brands, as well as our local Saugus vendors,” said Durden. “Also, we have student groups selling and raising funds, as long they’re an organization on Saugus’ campus.”

Products sold included both name-brand and homemade clothing, makeup, jewelry, accessories and holiday items. And the consistent success of the boutique results in high-quality vendors returning year after year, according to officials.

“Our returning vendors have priority, and then we have our long waitlist for those wishing to get a spot,” said “Boutique Fantastique” Chair Lisa Lin. “We have a 70 to 80 percent return rate (for our vendors) and the Boutique’s popularity is organic and basically drives itself.”

Many of the vendors have returned for years, some even stating that they set up their first “Boutique Fantastique” booth nearly a decade ago.

For instance, Pam Leighton, the owner of “Dazzle Me Designs,” has sold merchandise at the Saugus PTSO fundraiser for nine years in a row.

“The customers are phenomenal, I love my community and the sales are great,” said Leighton. “I make a lot of money here, and I have a lot of return customers.”

Pam Leighton, the owner of “Dazzle Me Designs,” has been a vendor at the Saugus High “Boutique Fantastique” for almost a decade.

However, while event organizers work to ensure that the vendors are happy and see high profit margins, PTSO volunteers remind themselves continuously what the weekend is about.

“We make sure that the vendors are happy and want to come back next year,” concluded Durden. “But we’re here to raise money for scholarships: that’s our purpose and that’s our goal.”
