SCV Senior Center officials held a public presentation Wednesday to showcase the new amenities and added activities seniors can expect at their new facility after over 40 years of serving the Santa Clarita Valley.

Dozens of Santa Clarita seniors were welcomed to the current center in Newhall to enjoy lunch and listen to a presentation about all the things the new SCV Senior Center is expected to offer.
Kevin MacDonald, the center’s executive director, shared the most recent updates regarding the construction timeline and developing programs with those in attendance.
“We’ve been here 41 years over, and 10,000 people have used the services here,” said MacDonald. “(But) the population for seniors will double by 2030. So we’re a little bit ahead of the curve in trying to develop services and support.”
The brand new, 30,000-square-foot, two-story center is set to be centrally located at Golden Valley Road and Newhall Ranch Road on 2.5 acres of newly-developed land.

The SCV Senior Center’s new facility is reported to be three times the size of the current center and is designed to contain six classrooms — five more than at the existing center, according to officials.
The additional classrooms are set to provide a variety of opportunities for senior growth that include everything from adult education to learning new hobbies to participating in entertaining activities.
During Wednesday’s presentation, senior citizens were also given the chance to suggest to SCV Senior Center staff their ideas on what activities they would like to see at the new center.
The new Santa Clarita Senior Center was funded by a number of private and public donors, including initial grants from both the County of Los Angeles and the City of Santa Clarita, with each donating $3 million. The Santa Clarita City Council also approved an additional $500,000 for the center in 2017.
However, the SCV Senior Center still needs to raise $1,000,000 to finalize their new facility, according to MacDonald, and officials are currently offering donors the honor of having their name placed on a wall alongside other supporters of the new building.
“We want to make a special opening day for the whole valley, so think about making a mark. This is the one great time we’re building a senior center, so put your name in that building somewhere,” MacDonald stated.
The new Santa Clarita Senior Center is expected to open its doors in the spring of 2019, according to officials.
