The 2017 California wildfire season was the most destructive and deadly on record burning more than a million acres, destroying over 9,000 homes and killing 43 people, according to a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station report.

“Not only are fireworks illegal in the City of Santa Clarita, but it takes just one little spark to start an uncontrollable wildfire,” said Shirley Miller, spokesperson with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Last 4th of July, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrested and cited 11 residents for possession of having illegal fireworks, according to officials.

“Even though it is easy to purchase fireworks in nearby counties they are illegal in Los Angeles County,” said Deputy Joshua Stamsek, with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “The charges for being in possession of illegal fireworks can be between $500 and $1000 depending on what kind of fireworks you are in possession of and if you have had previous firework charges.”

Due to the abundance of rainfall during the 2017 winter season, the amount of dry brush is a concern, according to officials.

“Even though the Stone Fire wasn’t started by fireworks, we do not want to have to deal with a fire like that because of the illegal use of fireworks,” said Stamsek. “If you see something, say something.”

The Los Angeles County Fire Department is prepared for the 4th of July to extinguish any fires that flare up, said Joey Marron, an inspector with the LACoFD.

Firefighters are planning to patrol their districts, looking for fire and letting their presence be known, according to officials.

“The Los Angeles County Fire Department highly recommends that residents go see a professional firework show rather than putting on their own,” said Marron.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
