‘Smart’ Doorbells Now Cheaper For Santa Clarita Residents, Subsidized By City

The Santa Clarita City Council approved a subsidy for “Ring” doorbells at their Tuesday meeting, cutting the price of the video-recording doorbells by $100 for up to 500 Santa Clarita residents.

The council voted unanimously to approve the decision.

The Ring Video Doorbell and Camera Rebate Program includes a $100 subsidy for up to 500 Santa Clarita households to purchase select Ring, Inc. doorbells and cameras on a first-come-first-served basis, according to city officials.

Santa Clarita officials have found a link between increased theft in the city and the reclassification of Assembly Bill 109, Proposition 47 and Proposition 57, which shortens the sentence for some non-violent criminal offences, including theft, according to city documents.

“These recent initiatives have negatively impacted crime rates across the state, including an increase in Part 1 Crimes in Santa Clarita in 2015.” the city document said.

According to the document presented to the City Council, AB 109 has shifted nearly 45,000 individuals from state prison to local county jails. This has led to an increase in county jail inmates with higher level sentences, meaning individuals who commit less severe crimes are released sooner.

In 2014, Proposition 47 reclassified some felony offenses as misdemeanors, including the reclassification of shoplifting, according to the council document. One of these misdemeanors has to do with the charge for stolen property. When the value of property stolen does not exceed $950, it is now classified as a misdemeanor.

In 2016, Proposition 57 amended the State Constitution to specify that any person convicted of a nonviolent felony offense would be considered for early release after completing the full term for their primary offense, according to the council document.

The Ring Doorbell and Camera Rebate Program is expected to aid the city with preventing residential burglaries, according to officials. The system provides a way to track and save videos to identify criminals and suspicious individuals.

The system has been shown to reduce home burglaries by 55 percent between July and December 2015 in the Wilshire Park neighborhood of Los Angeles, according to the council document.

Multiple cities around Southern California have already implemented the rebate program with Ring, Inc., including Rancho Palos Verdes and Temple City.

  5. This offer would be great if the Ring Doorbell was effective. It is very slow to respond. I will be buying a nest doorbell to monitor my Ring unit so it does not get stolen off the wall. By the time I can activate the Ring, it would be long gone. I am only one of MANY who have complained of the same problem.  Unfortunately I purchased the spotlight cams also only to experience the same issue.

  6. This story is full of editorializing. 2015 was 3 years ago. “Smart” devices should be deployed with great caution. I’m pretty sure you can disable a Ring Doorbell if you sneak up on it.
