Rancho Camulos is set to mark the 90th anniversary of the St. Francis Dam Disaster with special events throughout March 2018.

“At least 431 people were killed in and around those communities when the dam collapsed at 11:57 p.m. on March 12, 1928, about 10 miles north of Santa Clarita,” a news release explained. “A wall of water from the dam coursed down San Francisquito Canyon through Castaic Junction and into the Santa Clara River Valley before emptying into the Pacific Ocean between Oxnard and Ventura, creating a 55-mile path of death and destruction.”

The St. Francis Dam’s failure is considered one of the worst American civil engineering disasters of the 20th century and remains the second-greatest loss of life in California history, after the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, according to officials.

Legislation to create a St. Francis Dam memorial and monument on the site has passed the U.S. House of Representatives and is now in the Senate committee, the news release said.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
