The “Transition to Independence” conference, presented in partnership with State Senator Scott Wilk and Assemblyman Dante Acosta, is about preparing individuals who have a developmental disability for the transition to adulthood.
“There are a lot of services for people with developmental disabilities that many don’t know about,” said Wilk. “This conference is to show parents and caretakers what is available to them in the community.”
The conference is designed for families and caretakers to learn more about resources available to young adults with developmental disabilities as they transition from high school to adulthood and employment.
The event is for parents or caregivers of individuals with disabilities who are age 14 or older, or parents of younger children who are interested in preparing for transition early.
The conference is also open to professionals who work with individuals with disabilities and students age 14 or older who have an interest in the subject matter.
Wilk authored a bill last year to extend the age of benefits in California for a developmental disability, such as traumatic brain injury, from 18 to 22.
“I can’t even imagine the horror a family goes through when a child suffers a traumatic brain injury; let alone to discover your child is ineligible for services simply because he or she is over 18 years old,” said Wilk.
The bill, SB 283, hit a roadblock in committee, but Wilk is trying to push the legislation through the state budget process.
The free event is hosted by Senator Wilk, and sponsored by the Family Focus Resource Center and Advanced Behavioral Pathways. However, pre-registration is required due to limited seating and in order to know how many participants to expect for lunch.
Online registration is closed, according to the Eventbrite page, but attendees are still able to register at the event at before 9 a.m.
Additional seats may be available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the event if registered attendees do not show up, according to the organizers.
The conference is set for April 14 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Centre, 20880 Centre Pointe Pkwy, Santa Clarita, CA 91350.
