The 60th annual Monterey Jazz Festival — a two-day, three-night music festival that showcases over 500 jazz artists across eight stages — has invited the Valencia High School music program to return once again this year, and perform on two separate nights.

And as tribute to the past groups whose successes allowed the current members to have this experience, the high school program invited back graduated group members to return for a reunion and perform at the festival.

“I’ve developed so much as a person since becoming involved in this program,” said Hannah Walchotz, 18, a Valencia High graduate and former Two N’ Four group member. “My range has gotten bigger, my appreciation for music has increased and I do not think there is a day that goes by that I do not listen to vocal jazz.”

Last year, the Santa Clarita student choir had competed in the Jazz choir competition hosted by the festival, and due to them tying another program, were invited back for the 2017 festival.

“It’s definitely nostalgic, and when you’ve been around this program for a while you see a lot of groups come and go,” said Hannah. “This past year was just amazing year, and so to come back and do it again is truly an incredible experience.”

Headliners for the Monterey Jazz Festival include Herbie Hancock, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Common among others.

“This experience was really helpful in building my confidence and myself as a person,” said Walchotz.

“Some of them have been performing together since they were little or were in the program together all four years,” said Christine Tavares-Mocha, Valencia’s Choral Program Director. “So, it’s really cool for them to have experience to perform one last time all together.”

VHS’s choir is scheduled to perform both Saturday and Sunday of the Festival. Tickets and more information about the Monterey Jazz Festival can be found at the event’s website here.
