In honor of the annual November 11 federal holiday, City of Santa Clarita officials began to hold ceremonies of recognition on Wednesday when they unveiled the new “Fallen Warriors Monument” at Veterans Historical Plaza in Newhall.

The “The Fallen Warriors Monument” is meant to honor all known and unknown Santa Clarita residents who were killed on active duty.

“Santa Clarita has a reputation for honoring our veterans our active duty,” said Santa Clarita Mayor Cameron Smyth. “Adding this Fallen Warrior Monument, it’s just another testament of how this community loves our veterans, supports our military and won’t ever forget the sacrifice that they have made.”

The event is scheduled to feature speeches from community leaders as well as veteran and currently-serving military personnel, live performances of patriotic songs and military procedures conducted by veteran organizations.

The event is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. at Veterans’ Plaza located on Walnut Street.

Additionally, Congressional candidate, Katie Hill, held a “Veterans Appreciation Pancake Breakfast,” before, during and after the ceremony. The event featured a free breakfast for veterans as well as an opportunity for current and former-service members to socialize and share their stories.

Along with providing a free meal in appreciation of the veterans, the event raised money for “Headstrong,” a non-profit organization “that treats the psychological wounds of war,” according to the event’s Facebook page.

A Brief History of Veterans Day — Courtesy of CNN:

Although World War I officially ended on June 28, 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed, fighting between the Allied forces and Germany had already ceased months prior. On the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice went into effect.

Armistice Day was celebrated every year thereafter in the United States until 1954, when President Dwight D. Eisenhower changed it to Veterans Day to encompass the honoring of veterans of all American wars.

In 1930, the Veterans Administration (VA) was established to “consolidate and coordinate Government activities affecting war veterans.” It was renamed in 1989 as the Department of Veterans Affairs, continuing to be known as the VA.
