“The (southbound) side of the street will be shutdown until we have the pipe repaired,” said Valencia Water Company General Manager Ken Petersen. “We hope to have it done by the end of the day or by tonight.”

While traffic has not been shut down on the northbound side heading towards Decoro, the southbound side of McBean Parkway remains closed off.

Construction crews are working in an area just between the Newhall Ranch Rd./ McBean Pkwy and Decoro Dr./McBean Pkwy intersections.

City of Santa Clarita, Valencia Water Agency and SoCal Gas officials have all assisted in the repair efforts, with the ongoing project resulting in nearly hundreds of feet of asphalt needing to be replaced on the road, according to officials.

“We’re estimating that (the Valencia Water Company) will have about 500 feet of asphalt to replace,” said Petersen. “We’re still studying why this leak occurred.”

Initial reports indicate that although the leak was only active from 9:00 to 9:30 a.m. this morning, approximately 100,000 gallons of water was lost, according to officials.

A water main leak in Valencia early Wednesday morning sent water spilling into the streets, shutting down southbound traffic and requiring the Valencia Water Company to a send repair team.

“Water was flowing into the street,” said Petersen. “We sent a team out there to locate the leak and shut down the system where the leak is.”

Valencia Water Company was notified about the leak at approximately 9 a.m. Wednesday morning, according to officials.

“There was a lot of water and I would imagine that it affected traffic coming down Decoro and McBean,” continued Petersen.

As of 10:30 a.m., officials did not know if the onscene crew had located the leak or shut down the corresponding system.

Shortly after 11 a.m., the city of Santa Clarita warned residents that the southbound side of the street could be closed until Wednesday night.

As of 3:00 p.m. crews continued to work on site, and repaving work still needs to be done.
