Confusion Ensues From Late DMV Renewal Notices

DMV logoDue to budget uncertainties, the Department of Motor Vehicles waited until the beginning of this week to send out vehicle registration renewal notices to vehicle owners, panicking many recipients.

This postponement resulted in confusion as thousands of Californians received notices stating they would be charged fees if they did not make required payments within days of receiving the notices from the DMV. Despite the flyers that were included with the notices stating that there would be a 30-day grace period for payments due after July 1, the confusion over the fee deadlines resulted when many did not notice the flyer with this additional information.

The DMV has recommended that vehicle owners with a vehicle registration due during the month of July should wait until receiving a bill in the mail to make the payment.

“Our best advice is this: wait until you receive a bill from us to pay your fees,” said DMV Director George Valverde. “We will begin mailing billing notices on July 1, and all customers will be given a 30-day grace period to pay fees without penalty.”

California law currently prohibits the renewal of a vehicle registration until either the registration expiration date or the DMV generates a renewal notice, whichever comes first. The law requires registration renewal notices to be mailed out on or close to the expiration date of a vehicle license, instead of 60 days in advance.

According to the DMV’s website, customers are encouraged to utilize the renewal by mail or online Internet renewal program to renew their registration. These alternative service delivery options will automatically waive late fees for the first 30-days after the expiration date.

The website also points out that new registration cards and stickers will be issued as quickly as possible to ensure a smooth transition for vehicle owners despite the delays.

Those seeking further information should visit the DMV’s website to access information that is being continually updated by the DMV.
