Controlled Burn Gets Out Of Control In Castaic

A controlled burn at Pitchess Detention Center near Castaic has been knocked down. The training exercise, a joint effort by Ventura and Los Angeles Counties, was under control until a gust of wind picked up a corner of the fire and prompted a full brush fire response, including air support from Los Angeles City. The fire flared around 1:30 p.m.

Stephanie English of the Los Angeles County Fire Department said that the fire, dubbed the Rancho Incident, burned 25 acres and firefighters have achieved knockdown.

Another brush fire burned about 1 1/2 acres in Littlerock near the northbound 14 freeway north of 96th East and Fort Tejon Road earlier this afternoon.

And this morning, a one-acre fire behind Santa Clarita Studios in the Valencia Industrial Center was put out within an hour of ignition. The fire burned a hillside covered with light grasses. No structures were threatened.
