Council Looks Into North Copperhill Annexation On Tuesday

khts_citymatters_scvlogoOn Tuesday, the City Council will look at preparing boundary maps in anticipation of the future annexation of several areas north of Santa Clarita’s boundary between Seco Canyon and Bouquet Canyon Roads.

The area includes several homes north of Copperhill with a tract east of Haskell Canyon, comprising the “North Copperhill (Saugus)” annexation area.

According to the staff report, if the Council were to approve the mapping, prezoning of North Copperhill could follow after the expected adoption of One Valley One Vision, the update to the City’s General Plan.

The Council will also vote on two large road projects at its regular meeting. Using funds from the State Transportation Improvements Program, the City is prepared to install landscaping and irrigation systems along State Route 14 on- and off-ramps and Sand Canyon Road.

City staff is also proposing adding a fourth southbound lane on the McBean Parkway bridge over the Santa Clara River. The bridge, located near the post office, currently contains four northbound lanes as well. As part of the project, the City would construct barriers protecting pedestrians from vehicular traffic, which often reaches high speeds. Another improvement would add a direct connection between segments of the Santa Clara Trail beneath the bridge.

Also on the agenda, the Council, acting at the Redevelopment Agency, is expected to finalize a settlement with two auto-repair shops in downtown Newhall.

The $530,000 settlement will compensate Wanjon Auto Body and Automotive Technology for relocation costs and loss of goodwill. The City delivered eviction notices last year after acquiring the block of property near Main Street and Lyons Avenue.

Both storefronts are located across the street from the future Old Town Newhall Library and are in a prime spot for the City’s envisioned arts and entertainment district.
