Council May Authorize $60K For Auto Dealers Shop Local Campaign

The Santa Clarita City Council will consider authorizing $60,000 Tuesday to fund the Santa Clarita Automobile Dealers Association’s “Shop Local” campaign through the current fiscal year ending June 30, with options to extend it two more years.

The city launched the latest wave of “shop local” campaigns in 2004 in partnership with local auto dealers and has continued to fund the program for $60,000 annually. The money pays for marketing that explains the benefits to local residents when they make taxable purchases inside city limits.

According to a report from Jason Crawford, the city’s economic development and marketing manager, motor vehicle sales contributed $3.8 million in tax revenue to the city in calendar year 2010, representing 15.7 percent of the city’s total annual sales tax revenues.

The shop local program is a marketing campaign urging local residents to buy cars and trucks from Santa Clarita auto dealers because sales taxes generated from the purchases are spent entirely on services provided by the city, from public safety to roads and parks.
