Council Race Adds Two Candidates

Spierer, Gutzeit will run for City Council.

ImageToday Bob Spierer held a press conference in front of City Hall to officially declare his candidacy for City Council.

Maria Gutzeit has also filed Candidate Intention Statement papers with the City Clerk.

Spierer began his address by stating “My entire adult life has been one of public service. Now, I want to continue on that path by serving the citizens and the city of Santa Clarita.”

He continued; “I’m here today to announce that I am a candidate for the Santa Clarita City Council in the April 2008 election.”

Separately, Maria Gutzeit issued a statement in which she made clear her intentions.

“For several years, people have been encouraging me to run for City Council” Gutzeit said, “and with an open seat that will not be challenged by an incumbent, 2008 is a unique opportunity.  I love serving the public, balancing the needs of different stakeholders, and crafting well-thought out, lasting solutions to problems. So I’m in for the 2008 race!”

ImageBoth candidates also put their names in when the Council looked to appoint Cameron Smyth’s replacement a few months ago. There they went through interviews by a community panel and were blindly ranked by each of the fifteen panel members.

Gutzeit and Spierer both made the top five, with Spierer receiving the highest ranking, 56. Gutzeit was given an 18.

Spierer called upon his experience as a high ranking Sheriff’s official, having served both as this City’s first station commander in 1988, and as Division Chief. That position saw him manage a staff of 13,000 and a budget of over $1 billion.

As far as the community goes, Spierer moved into town in 1993 and was a member of the Optimist and Rotary clubs, COC Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club. He now serves on the Anti-Gang Task Force Steering Committee, Newhall Re-development Committee and the Sheriff’s Booster Club Board of Directors.

Gutzeit has been in an elected position since 2003, serving one year as Vice President and two years as President of the Newhall County Water District Board of Directors.

She also served on the Board of Directors for the Committee on Aging, LA County Bicycle Coalition and the Santa Clarita Valley Environmental Coalition, in addition to her role as a committee chair for the Chamber of Commerce.

Bob Spierer said that some of the most pressing issues for Santa Clarita are traffic and safety.

There will be two seats up in the April 2008 election. One of which will be vacant, the other is Mayor Pro Tem Bob Kellar's seat, and he is running for re-election.
