Los Angeles County Supervisors Michael D. Antonovich and Zev Yaroslavsky have announced that the County’s Rural Outdoor Lighting District Ordinance becomes effective Wednesday, December 12.

Also known as “Dark Skies,” the ordinance establishes outdoor lighting regulations and standards in select unincorporated communities in the Santa Clarita Valley, the Antelope Valley, and the Santa Monica Mountains, and in other rural areas in unincorporated Los Angeles County.

The regulations will permit reasonable amounts of outdoor lighting for safety and security while conserving energy and protecting natural resources, and maintaining the rural lifestyle by preserving non-obscured views of the dark, star-filled nighttime sky.

The Department of Regional Planning is the lead agency charged with investigating and enforcing reports of excess nighttime lighting.
