County Approves New Sexual Assault Team

Team will be dedicated to such crimes

ImageTo enhance the Sheriff Department’s ability to investigate, prosecute and prevent sexual assaults, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $1.2 million grant from the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, announced Supervisor Michael D. Antonovich.

The Sheriff’s Department's SAFE Team program is a countywide effort to combat the non-compliance of sex offender registrants in Los Angeles County – where 25 percent of the State's total registrants reside.

With a coordinated team of investigators, including a deputy district attorney and a probation officer, SAFE Teams utilize inter-agency communication, intelligence sharing, increased contact with registrants and community education to reduce recidivism by ensuring that sex offenders are registering and monitored appropriately.

This comes as local Sheriff’s Deputies are searching for a suspect that is wanted for at least one sexual assault in Santa Clarita, and may be connected to two more. All three assaults took place in the Canyon Country area between January and June, and all incidents had similar traits. An artistic rendering of this suspect is available in our “Catch A Crook” section.
