County Budget Shortchanges Public Safety

Los Angeles County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich said the CAO’s $19.4 billion dollar proposed 2006-2007 budget shortchanges public safety. “Gang warfare continues to plague our County.  We must address the gang issue by meeting the needs of the Sheriff, the District Attorney, and Probation —  instead of raising taxes or issuing more bonds as suggested by the CAO and Sheriff.  Public safety must be the top priority. The proposed budget ignores the Sheriff’s request for funding to fill positions at sheriff stations, $1.9 million dollars for additional positions in the homicide bureau and funding to increase the staff-to-inmate ratio at Men’s Central Jail.  The CAO must also set aside a significant amount of the estimated $160 million dollars needed to refurbish Sybil Brand Institute.”
