County Hotline Shows Success Combating Employee Fraud

Hotline is operational 24 hours a day and suspected fraud can be reported anonymously

Saving taxpayers millions of dollars, the Los Angeles County Fraud Hotline continues to target and eliminate fraud among County employees and vendors, announced Mayor Michael D. Antonovich. 155 new investigations were opened during the quarter ending March 31, 2006.  Of the new investigations, 150 cases were closed, 28 of which were substantiated and 60 that were not substantiated.  Investigations on the 28 substantiated cases resulted in 4 dismissals, 1 suspension, 1 resignation, 1 reassignment, 4 counseling sessions, and 7 referrals to the District Attorney’s Office. The remainder of the cases are pending resolution.

Violations included theft of time, overtime, supplies and fees, identity theft, fraudulent reimbursement of mileage, misuse and personal use of County computers, misuse of County equipment, education requirement policy violations, and various personnel misconducts. Since its initiation in 1988 by Supervisor Antonovich, the hotline has
detected more than $13.5 million in fraud.  The hotline is operational 24 hours a day and suspected fraud can be reported anonymously.  The toll-free number is (800) 544-6861.
