The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is expected to allocate $162,000 Tuesday to stabilize hillsides that have eroded at the 160-acre Del Valle Regional Fire Training Facility on Chiquito Canyon Road in Val Verde.

According to a report submitted to the supervisors by county Chief Executive William Fujioka and Fire Chief Daryl Osby, “Heavy rains in the past have caused erosion at various locations on the 160-acre Del Valle site.

“Two areas have been heavily eroded and require immediate protection to minimize further erosion until an erosion control plan can be developed for the entire site. The first location is on the northwest section of the site where the erosion has damaged a 20-foot section of a 200-foot-long concrete gutter, causing an unsupported void under 10-feet of the concrete gutter at the end of the downstream terminus. The second location is at the south section of the site where several feet of land was washed away. If rain water continues to flow through this location, it may compromise the adjacent leeching field.

“Temporary protective measures have been performed, including placing sand bags and creating berms to divert rain water flow from these areas. Plastic covers were used to carry the run-off into the protect the soils and flexible pipes were installed downstream terminus. The proposed erosion control measures, designed by Public Works Design Division, will grade the surrounding areas to drain to the gutter or pipes, install drainage pipes on the ground surface, and repair the gutter to carry the flow to a new energy dissipating rip-rap at the downstream terminus of each area. These measures would divert the flow of the water away from the eroded area and dissipate the energy created from the flow to reduce erosion.”

The report says there are sufficient funds in the County Fire District’s capital account to cover the cost.

A contractor should be selected in early May and the work should be complete in mid-June.
