Cracking Down On Buckling Up

Santa Clarita Sheriffs launch campaign set to target those who don’t buckle their seat belt.

[view:node_ad=5]The Santa Clarita Sheriffs Station will be strictly enforcing the “Click It Or Ticket” movement this month.  In an effort to help California achieve the highest seat belt use rate in the nation, law officers will increase the number of sheriffs on duty and will issue tickets to those who don’t buckle up.  Officers will not issue any warnings and tickets for the first offense range from $80-$401 depending on the violators age.

Sergeant Richard Cohen said that officers hope the campaign will keep both drivers and passengers safe.  “No matter where you’re going, buckle up.  Day or night, use your seat belt, and tell your passengers to do the same.  Remember, click it or ticket,” said Cohen.

Although California currently has the fourth highest seat belt usage rating at 94.6%, California’s teen seat belt use rate was significantly lower at 88.9%.

More than 280 law enforcement agencies statewide will be participating in this year’s “Click It Or Ticket” movement.  Funding for the officer overtime to support the program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
