Juan Ortiz, 55, a civilian laundry supervisor at Pitchess Detention Center, South Facility, was arrested early Tuesday morning for allegedly bringing narcotics into the jail facility.

An individual was robbed at gunpoint near Commuter Way and Soledad Canyon Road on Wednesday. The suspects fled in a gray Chrysler. Deputies responded to the scene and detained three individuals in a similar vehicle near Newhall Ranch Road and Bouquet Canyon Road.

Several suspects with Santa Clarita ties went to court this week.

Canyon Country west

This past week in Zone 7, the following Part-1 Crimes occurred:

(1) Aggravated Assault, (1) Robbery, (4) Shoplift, (2) Grand Thefts and (3) Petty Thefts.

An incident of domestic violence occurred near the 27000 block of Honby Avenue when a married couple was involved in an altercation. The altercation became physical when the suspect grew angry and bit the tip of the victim’s finger off. Deputies responded to the location and arrested the suspect. The incident is currently under investigation by Santa Clarita Valley Station detectives.

A robbery occurred near the 26400 block of Carl Boyer Drive. A female suspect walked out of the location, failing to pay for items she concealed in a handbag. When loss prevention personnel attempted to detain the suspect, she began to fight with the employees. The suspect was subsequently arrested by responding deputies.

Two petty theft/shoplifts also occurred near the 26400 block of Carl Boyer Drive, resulting in one arrest.

A grand theft occurred near the 26700 block of Oak Avenue. An unknown suspect entered a storage yard and took a vehicle rotisserie extension.

A grand theft occurred near the 21100 block of Centre Pointe Parkway. An unknown suspect removed a 33’ sail from a 1991 Prindel sailboat. The boat was parked in the lot of a local business.

A petty theft occurred near the 26600 block of Valley Center Drive. An unknown suspect took the two rear tires off of a company vehicle which was parked in the rear lot of the location.

A petty theft occurred near the 26400 block of Ruether Avenue. An unknown suspect cut the fuel line to a vehicle parked in front of a business and took several gallons of gasoline.

Newhall

There were two part 1 crimes reported in the Newhall Zone 6 area over the previous week. An attempted residential burglary, and an arrest for the burglary of a travel trailer.

Between 10:00 p.m. Monday, September 23 and 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 24 an unknown person tried to pry the door open of an apartment in the 24300 block of Daylily Drive while the resident was not home. There have been similar incidents in recent months in the same general area. The residents of the apartments near Valle Del Oro and Dockweiler Drive should be especially diligent in reporting suspicious behavior. There are numerous people in the area in all walks of life, but just pay attention to breaking noises, dogs barking, flashlights, and people you don’t recognize acting suspicious. Neighborhood watch doesn’t need to be an organized group with meetings, it can be just be a person concerned about the neighborhood you live in.

On Thursday, September 26, at 8:15 a.m., a business owner in the 22400 block of 12th Street saw a person exiting his travel trailer. The 20-year-old male was arrested for burglary and vandalism for breaking into the trailer and intentionally causing damage inside it. When you see a crime occurring, call 911, stay on the phone, and be a good witness. Be very careful taking independent action which could place your safety or your family’s safety in peril. Suspects of any type of crime can be unpredictable.

Beware of telephone scams. There are three separate types of phone scams that are appearing in Los Angeles County. One scam is someone impersonating a DEA agent. The fake DEA agent has been calling residents who have purchased prescription medication through the mail. The scammer convinces the person they have committed a felony and agents are going to arrest them. The scammer tells the person they can avoid arrest simply by paying a fine, which normally is $3,100 in cash.

A second scam is where someone calls a resident who has solicited internet information on personal loans. The scammer negotiates a loan, and then convinces the person they will have to pay a down payment on loan payments. The scam is usually concluded with the victim purchasing cash cards from a retail store and providing the card number to the scammer.

A third scam which was told to me this week from a Newhall resident, is someone posing as a police officer and soliciting cash donations for a Police Expo. Don’t be a scam victim. Take the time to research businesses and solicitations. There are numerous legitimate businesses who solicit over the phone, but there are numerous phony ones too. Often times just researching the phone number the solicitors use by placing it into an internet browser will quickly uncover a scam.

A new scam to be aware of is phony insurance solicitors claiming to be with the government. The callers will claim to be helping sign people up for the new government insurance plans under “Obama Care”. Be sure to research the legitimate government website at www.HealthCare.gov . If you need information about the plans, use the contacts provided by the government for the health agencies you would like information from.

A notable arrest I wanted to mention. Detectives from the COBRA team identified and arrested a second suspect involved in the stabbing that took place in Newhall on September 15. The 27-year-old female suspect was booked in Lancaster and is being held on bail in excess of one million dollars.

Valencia

Zone 5-Valencia had nineteen Part-1 Crimes reported during the past week. The criminal incidents included an aggravated assault, grand theft of autos, grand thefts from unlocked vehicles, vehicle burglary and shoplifting from local businesses.

An assault resulting in a child endangerment occurred on a football field on Tuesday evening. The suspect, a father of one of the players, was seen stumbling across the parking lot of the football field. When the suspect attempted to get in a vehicle with his children, he was confronted by a concerned parent and it was determined that the suspect had been drinking. An argument occurred resulting in a fight. The suspect was arrested and additionally charged with drunk in public. The children were not injured and were taken into protective custody.

There were two grand theft autos that occurred during the week in the morning hours. One vehicle was stolen from Fairview and McBean Parkway and the other was stolen from the 28000 block of Avenue Crocker. Both vehicles were stolen from parking locations and were recovered the next day. One of the vehicles was recovered in LAPD’s Newton Division damaged and stripped. The other vehicle was found intact and recovered two blocks away from where it was stolen.

Two grand thefts from unlocked vehicles occurred during the weekend between the hours of 9:30 p.m. and 8:00 a.m. Both vehicles were parked in the victim’s driveway in homes behind the Granary Square area. Items stolen were a laptop computer, loose change, a wallet and a briefcase containing miscellaneous items. The items stolen were left in plain view on the rear passenger seats of the victim’s vehicles. No suspect(s) have been identified at this time.

A vehicle burglary also occurred during the weekend in the morning hours between Arroyo Parkway and McBean Parkway. The victim parked his vehicle on the streets in front of his residence. It appeared the suspect(s) entered the vehicle by punching the keyhole of the driver side door. Items stolen were an X-Box, a stereo unit and speaker boxes, all which were located in the passenger compartment of the vehicle.

Do not become a victim. Do not leave valuables unattended or leave items visible in your vehicles. Secure items in locked trunks or take personal belongings with you when you exit your vehicle. If possible, park in well-lit areas.

If you see any suspicious activity or vehicles in your neighborhood, please call the Sheriff’s Station immediately at 661-255-1121.

There were twelve arrests made by proactive Santa Clarita Deputies assigned to the Valencia area last week. Arrests included child endangerment, possession of narcotics, drunk in public and shoplifting.
