Alexia Cina, Suspect In Fatal Santa Clarita Crash, Wasn’t Over-Served, Bar Owner Says

Alexia Cina, the suspect in a fatal Santa Clarita crash that killed a mother of six was drinking at a popular Santa Clarita bar and grill with friends before the crash — but she was not “over-served,” the owner of Schooners Patio Grill told KHTS News Friday.

Alexia Cina, 21, of Canyon Country, was arrested for felony vehicular manslaughter and felony driving under the influence, causing injury, in relation to the Oct. 6 crash that killed Saugus mother Katie Evans, 37, according to officials.

Initial information from Sheriff’s Station officials who reported the arrest noted her blood-alcohol level was 0.21, and a level of 0.08 is considered driving under the influence.

KHTS News learned that Alexia Cina was at Schooners, on Soledad Canyon Road, with friends, before the crash, according to a person familiar with the situation who asked not to be named.

However, when contacted Friday morning, Art Ledesma, owner of Schooners Patio Grille, said he produced records for the Sheriff’s Station deputies investigating the case.

“She bought two drinks at our place, one for her and one for her friend,” Ledesma said, “that was all we served her.”

“Everybody has a policy on over-serving,” Ledesma said, adding his establishment was no different.

“If we see that you’re not functioning right, or walking in a not appropriate way, my girls are quick to cut off,” he said.

Ledesma also mentioned a fact that had been reported in numerous stories and confirmed by Sheriff’s Station officials, which was that open alcohol containers were found in her car.

Ledesma’s staff would have no way of controlling her drinking after she left the bar, he said, or if someone had been “sneaking her drinks” without anyone knowing.

“There were some open containers in the primary person’s vehicle,” said Lt. Rob Hahnlein with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, confirming that they held alcoholic beverages, shortly after the crash.

The woman who investigators suspect was behind the wheel of the car they found the containers in is receiving care for her injuries at Henry Mayo Newhall hospital.

“She was found sitting at the curb when we got there,” Hahnlein said. “She’s at the hospital getting checked out.”

Emergency responders arrived to a three car wreck at the Golden Valley Road bridge over Soledad Canyon Road at approximately 11:50 p.m., Los Angeles County Fire officials said.

Of the three drivers involved, one person was pronounced dead on scene, another was transported to the hospital, and the third only suffered minor injuries and did not require a transport.

“It just looks like a person traveling south on Golden Valley accidentally hit the right curb heading into traffic coming northbound, striking oncoming traffic,” Hahnlein said.

  1. This being the 2nd known fatality that had Schooners being involved & also given the same statement by the owner that they did not over serve the person who was involved in DUI and killing another driver. The first one was a 40+ year old female that was struck off of 10th in Palmdale by a drunk driver leaving Schooners in Palmdale. The drunk female driver had just left there while drinking with a group of friends. She also worked for the US Forestry and is now serving time for killing the other driver. She was apparently 4x over the legal drinking limit. Again…they claim they did not over serve her. Well who’s job is it to make sure that person who leaves their establishment after drinking their alcohol to make sure that person gets home safely or isn’t out there on the streets being a risk to others. Make your money but don’t care what happens after the person leaves drunker then a skunk from your establishment? Not your problem once that person leaves. I bet it would be if that same person hit & killed a member of your own family. Would it be your problem then?

  2. SO sad on many, MANY levels. It is not unusual for Miss Cina’s age group to be drinking AND smoking/ingesting THC together. Now they are DOUBLY intoxicated and so I can visualize that there is much more to come now that weed is ‘legal’ for our State. Praying for Katie’s family, I can not even imagine:( AND, I’m keeping the young woman (who caused this accident) AND her family in my prayers as well. Some may not agree with me but I have daughters, so her family is in great pain as well. The consequences of this young woman’s bad choices will stay and torment her for the rest of her life.

    • If found guilty, Alexia Cina should be held responsible for her actions. She should never marry, never have children but should choose to dedicate her entire life and resources to work and financially support the victims family for the remainder of her life.

In the spirit of good will how much money has Schooners contributed to the victims family?

    • I doubt if anyone who leaves Schooners is sober.

      • not true I often visit for a drink and I never leave intoxicated. Why must we blame anyone other than the one that got behind the wheel and drank? time to take responsibility for her own actions

      • I somewhat agree. Not blaming anyone except the one who drove drunk, but “his girls” are definitely not quick to cut anybody off. Speaking from experience

      • Yeah I agree. I have been to schooners with friends to watch UFC fights. I have one friend, who is a “professional drinker” who I have NEVER seen the server or bar tender cut him off! As friends, we end up grabbing his keys and getting his ass home safe….but he goes there all the time to watch any sports, drinking alone and God only knows how many times he staggered out alone! He quit saying goodbye towards the end, to avoid us from taking his keys away. We quit hanging out. Can’t watch that train wreck anymore. He’s had DUIs, but has lots of $$ tips huge So servers look the other way, and PAD the tab because they know he’s too drunk to remember how many beers he ordered. Plus mysery loves company, and when his friends are DONE, and want to leave, he starts buying rounds for anyone who will keep him company!!

    • I was thinking the exact same thing. So tragic for all involved. My heart is broken for the husband and family of the deceased; but also for the Cina family. Miss Cina’s poor mom is probably suffering in equal proportion. Miss Cina’s life will never be the same ever again. I am praying for all of those touched by this tragedy.

  3. At .21 Alexia Cina was obviously drinking someplace. She couldn’t have had one drink to have her BAC rise to .21. She took the life of a mother with 6 children for what? Getting a buzz? Poor judgment, shel’ll live with guilt the rest of her life. Instead I hope a drunk driver takes her and her immediate family out. She forever changed the lives of those 6 children and the grieving husband. I hope she never rests.

    • Its unfortunate what happened, but now you’re advocating that her immediate family gets killed who had nothing to do with the situation. She was 21, a legal adult who made a very bad judgement and I agree she should serve time but advocating other members to get killed is just crazy.

    • @ Cook, both families are in terrible pain. I know both families personally. Shame on you for your stupidity. This was a very bad judgment call by a 21 year old woman, that will stay with her forever.,but make no mistake Cook.. of her character and the person she is. She is an outstanding human being. Humble, kind and very smart with a very high GPA. Of coarse this doesn’t excuse her choice that night, but simply wishing pain upon her family is pure evil.

  4. If found guilty, Alexia Cina should be held responsible for her actions. She should never marry, never have children but should choose to dedicate her entire life and resources to work and financially support the victims family for the remainder of her life.

In the spirit of good will how much money has Schooners contributed to the victims family?

  5. “It is not unusual for Miss Cina’s age group to be drinking AND smoking/ingesting THC together. Now they are DOUBLY intoxicated and so I can visualize that there is much more to come now that weed is ‘legal’ for our State.“

It is not unusual for any age group (except children) to be drinking and smoking/ingesting THC together. And it doesn’t DOUBLE your intoxication. And why the quotes around legal? It actually is legal.

  6. “If we see that you’re not functioning right, or walking in a not appropriate way, my girls are quick to cut off,” he (Ledesna) said.

    My girls? Ugh.

Praying for the families of all involved.

    • Really???
      Let’s try this:
      1. Stick to the topic. In this case, a woman was killed.
      2. “My girls” is not a derisive or demeaning term here. This establishment is a locally owned and operated business, and some of these workers are family by blood, if not family by choice. Would you chide a member of your blood or chosen family for referring to you as “my girl”?
Stop looking for ways to be offended where no offense was meant, and instead be offended that someone died, someone made a very bad choice, and there was nothing good about that for any one.

  7. Today you can take a $10 lift or uber ride anywhere, no reason to get behind the wheel.

  8. No Bar or Eating establishment should ever be held responsible for legal age Drinkers having to much. As long as Alcohol is legal its each person own responsibility to control themselves.

  9. Uber. Lyft. Tipsy Tow. It’s pretty easy people. Drink, be merry, and just get a ride. It’s a new paradigm. It’s pretty cheap too! We all have smart phones, so download the ap. Last resort, taxicab it if you don’t want your credit card information on the web. To plug a local company, Designated Drivers of Santa Clarita (661) 313-8336 will come and drive you and your vehicle home for about $20. It’s a no brainer!

  10. My husband was also killed on by a drunk driver who also drank at Schooners. They conveniently couldn’t come up with the paperwork or video (system failed). The drunk driver that hit and killed my husband had a BAC of .214. This happened on a Thursday night at 9:10pm! She is 23 years old. She is now serving a 7 year sentence in State Prison!
