Around 3 a.m. Saturday, deputies received a report that a man entered a gas station on the 28500 block of Sand Canyon Road in Canyon Country and allegedly pointed a black semi-automatic handgun at the store employee behind the counter, demanding money, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s officials said.
The clerk complied with the robber’s orders and gave him the contents of the cash register, officials said.
A Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station detective who was assigned to the case released images of the robber and his vehicle that had been obtained from the store’s video surveillance system to patrol deputies.
The detective jokingly told deputies, “don’t come back to the station unless the suspect is in custody.”
One deputy took the words to heart.
At approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday Deputy Murray, who was nearing the end of his shift, spotted a man and vehicle that matched the description of the robber at a business located near the gas station.
“In fact, the male adult was even still wearing the same clothes. It was a match,” officials said in a statement.
Matthew Girard, 27, from Santa Clarita, was arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail, where he was booked on felony robbery charges.
His bail was set at $100,000.
