Several factors have affected the bail bonds business over the past 10 years, and it’s been a rollercoaster of a ride.

With the Great Recession from early 2007 to mid-2009 and the growth that came out of that, bail bonds agents have had some rough years, said Jeff Chavez, vice president of All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita.
“During the recession, we would have to turn away clients because they couldn’t give us the collateral that we needed,” he added.
Collateral goes along with a bail bond and usually is a deed to a house or pink slip for car, something that assures the person who has been bailed out won’t flee.
“After the recession and in more recent years, our business, All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita, has prospered,” Chavez said. “We try to help about 100 clients a month.”
While the economy seems to be on the up, other factors can cause bumps in the road for the bail bonds business.
“With the passing of Proposition 47, I have seen a 25 percent decrease in the number of clients we serve,” Chavez said. “That’s one-fourth of our business gone.”
Proposition 47 was implemented in the Nov. 2014 elected and criminal offenders who commit certain nonserious and nonviolent drug and property crimes would be sentenced to reduced penalties, according to the California Voter Guide. State savings resulting from the measure will be used to support school truancy and dropout prevention, victim services, mental health and drug abuse treatment, and other programs designed to keep offenders out of prison and jail.
More than 60 percent of California voters approved the law.
“For now, we will keep moving forward at All American Bail Bonds in Santa Clarita,” Chavez said. “We will keep evolving with our economy and our community.”
