“We’re closing our campus at (11:30 a.m.) today,” said Denise Nelson, a spokeswoman for the school. “We had a threat. We don’t know if its credible.”

CalArts does not have a summer session, so only a handful of students were on campus Monday, along with staff members, she said. But the decision to close down the campus came “out of an abundance of caution.”

A statement from the school emphasized that officials were being cautious even without classes in session.

“The Institute’s security personnel are working with law-enforcement to evaluate the situation,” the statement reads. “CalArts will err on the side of caution and close the campus today … to ensure the safety of its students, staff, and faculty.”

The threat, made through Twitter, is being investigated by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“I’m not quite sure what we’re facing,” said Lt. Doug Mohrhoff, of the credibility of the threat. “We’re investigating.”

This is not the first Santa Clarita school to have received threats of violence in recent months.

In the months following the the shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, seven other Santa Clarita Valley schools — SCVi, West Ranch, Saugus, Golden Valley, Canyon, Valencia and Arroyo Seco — had all individually received reports of potential violence against their campuses.

More recently, on May 14, Valencia High School officials were made aware of a threat that was made against the school through social media, but officials determined the threat to be non-credible.

  1. Just FYI, CalArts DOES have a summer session. There were about 60 summer students on campus today.
