There was a 14.4% increase in population in 2013, according to the FBI, and Santa Clarita saw an overall drop in violent crimes of 19.3%.

This includes a 37% drop in rapes; a 26.5% drop in aggravated assault and an 18% drop in motor vehicle theft.

There were some category increases in 2013: two murders in 2013 compared with one in 2012; an uptick in burglaries, going from 616 in 2012 to 704 in 2013.

But overall, the city of Santa Clarita is one of Los Angeles County’s safest cities.

“The decline in serious crimes is absolutely attributable to our commitment to crime prevention and enforcement, and the partnerships we’ve successfully forged with the City, school districts, our residents and businesses,” said Captain Roosevelt Johnson, of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “Keeping Santa Clarita safe is a community-wide effort.”

Johnson assumed command of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station earlier this year.

Johnson has continued aggressive efforts to prevent crime and apprehend criminals, working through the successful zone program and special teams.

“Public safety is an important quality of life work effort for the city of Santa Clarita,” said Ken Striplin, City Manager. “Making sure our residents feel safe, that crime remains low and that we are continually assessing trends, staffing levels and needs is a top priority for the City Council.”
