The Community Academy is a six-week course, starting in November, “designed to inform and education the citizens of the Santa Clarita Valley community about the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department,” according to Sheriff’s Station officials. “We will provide the public with a better understanding of how the Sheriff’s Department operates.”

The Community Academy is a program that’s been used at other Sheriff’s Station to give the public a better understanding of what deputies do in our community, and insight about their training, said Capt. Roosevelt Johnson of Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The program consists of six sessions, meeting every Tuesday night from 7-9 p.m., beginning Nov. 11 and concluding Dec. 16.

Participants will learn about nearly every aspect of the Sheriff’s Station including: patrol procedures, jail operations, detective bureau investigations, gang and narcotic enforcement and how they can become involved with helping us protect our community by organizing a neighborhood watch, officials said.

The program includes classroom lectures, a tour in the field, or ride-along, and a tour of a  custody facility.

Due to availability constraints, there are 30 spots for the first class. However, Sheriff’s Station officials plan to offer the program again in the near future.

For information on how to sign up for the program, contact Deputy Fanny Lapkin at 661-799-5160 or email Flapkin@lasd.org.

The last day to submit applications for the November 2014 academy class will be Monday, Nov. 3.

Applicants must be 18 years of age before the start of the academy and must live or work in the Santa Clarita Valley.

Applicants must not be involved in any criminal process or have felony convictions. All applications are subject to approval of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

  1. Will this academy be for residents of the City of Santa Clarita or the entire area the department covers, including surrounding rural areas in the County?

  2. Is there any relationship between this and the reserve deputy program?
