Julio Cesar Jimenez, 35, a former Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department cadet, has been charged with one felony count each for grand theft, arson of property of another and vandalism over $400, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

While working as a Brinks security guard, Jimenez allegedly stole the money he was supposed to deliver on Nov. 28, 2017 and returned on Dec. 1, 2017 to burn the ATM machine, according to the the criminal complaint.

The complaint alleges the loss exceeded $65,000.

Jimenez began working for the Sheriff’s department on Dec. 18, and was in the first phase of the 22-week academy training period when the discovery of his potential involvement in the crimes surfaced, according to Cpt. Darren Harris of LASD.

Jimenez was booked Feb. 15 on suspicion of theft, embezzlement and arson. He posted bail later that day.

“Suspect Jimenez is no longer employed by the department,” said Harris.

“Based on the timeline, it appears the crimes allegedly committed by Jimenez occurred between the time his background investigation concluded and his date of employment with the department,” officials said.

The case was officially filed on March 6. If convicted as charged, Jimenez faces a possible maximum sentence of more than five years in prison.

Jimenez is due back in court on September 26 for another preliminary hearing setting, when court officials have 10 days to set a date for the actual preliminary hearing, according to Ricardo Santiago, spokesman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
