Denise Ann Gillis, 50, shared a home with her father, James Gillis, on the 31900 block of Emerald Lane, in a small residential community called Stonegate.
While Gillis was declared mentally competent to stand trial, which essentially means, in her case, a pair of mental health experts determined she was capable of understanding what was going on during the trial enough to be able to assist in her own defense.
As a result, she was released from Patton State Hospital, a mental health facility, on June 13.
However, such a determination would not rule out the potential for Denise Gillis to later plead not guilty by reason of insanity, a claim indicating the suspect was insane at the time the crime was committed.
Deputies arrested Gillis after her father was found stabbed to death in their home. The suspicious death was reported Friday at 9:15 a.m., according to Sheriff’s Station records.
Gillis was taken into custody around 10:30 a.m., according to Sheriff’s Department records and a neighbor who saw her placed in handcuffs in front of the home.
At her Aug. 31 preliminary hearing, a judge will hear the evidence against Denise Gillis and determine whether there’s enough to make her stand trial for the murder charge.
She’s currently being held at Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood in lieu of $1,020,000 bail.
