Ralph August Steger, 75, of Canyon Country, pled no contest to the three charges filed against him: vehicular manslaughter, an infraction for unsafe speed and failure to stop at a red light.

Steger faces a maximum sentence of one year in county jail and a $1,000 fine, but because he pled no contest to the court, the judge in the case will get the final say in his sentencing, said Ricardo Santiago, a spokesman for the District Attorney’s office.

The Canyon Country resident reportedly ran a red light on Seco Canyon Rd. and Bouquet Canyon Rd. on July 16, 2015, fatally striking Savaikie while he was skateboarding, according to officials.

The teen’s mother, Teresa Savaikie, described Wyatt as a “gentle giant” and her “rock” in an interview with SCV News.

“He was beautiful,” she said. “We are so honored to have had the privilege of having him in our lives, as our gentle giant, our precious son.”

Steger is scheduled to face a judge for sentencing Aug. 8.

  1. To all of our sons Wyatt Savaikie’s friends, Thank you from the bottom of our heart for speaking of our beautiful son, in a way, it feels as if, through your beautiful words, Wyatt was able to tell his short but beautiful life, what a champion he was protecting everyone, ever those he did not know from bullies, thank you for making the judge understand what a supportive, loving friend he was and will always remain in your hearts and minds. I tried so hard to explain Wyatt n a way that would give the court a glimpse of Wyatt’s magical precious spirit, I tried for months to write Wyatt Savaikie’s Victim Impact Statement but in the end I simply had to come to terms that our son, our children’s baby brother was such a special soul, his smile made everyone want to smile, just to be with him, well, as so many described, just made everyone happy. I finally realized, that we were blessed with someone so special that no matter how many words I say, no matter how many beautiful, fun and loving stories I shared there was nothing that will and could ever be enough words, enough words to explain what it felt just to be with him, he just made you feel good just to be with him, He remains forever and always my precious son, My Gentle Giant and I pray he is somewhere watching over to see the love from his friends and community. Thank you so much for trying to explain a person that cannot be really described, his beautiful internal light, his soul. Sometimes some parents my think or feel that there is something so different and special about their child, sometimes we might wonder, though, I never did, if they were as special as I was. Wyatt once called Wyatt the Riot and then another teacher gave him the name Wyatt the Gentle Giant, So many parents told me how Wyatt protected their kids, – many parents told me Wyatt was their hero – all of the beautiful words from his friends and family – well, it sealed forever in my heart, forever in my soul and mind that Wyatt was nothing short of all I knew and adored. Please children, youth, pedestrians do not use Seco and Bouquet, be careful out here, you cannot survive the current speed limits and so many of us drive around this valley playing Russian Roulette with our vehicles on our already dangerous streets and roadways. It is true, that our city streets and roads are suppose to be built for people whether driving, walking, biking, jogging, etc. but please, please understand that these streets, our roads, the very roads you must cross to get where you are going are dangerous. There is Zero Room for driver error. In addition and finally, we taught Wyatt safety, taught to look both ways before crossing, to never j-walk and to even walk against traffic to see oncoming traffic, we took him to Central Parks Youth Grove to reflect on all the youths lost to vehicle incidents, and still, still, Wyatt is gone, through ZERO fault of his own. please do all you can to make sure you do not cross any of these streets with curves in the road, because there is nothing that will protect or warn you when you step out and a driver decides to put caution to the wind, flying around a corner at 63 miles an hour around a bend., even with another car parked in the lane next to him, already stopped at the red light, in addition Seco and Bouquet had more Red-light traffic tickets then any other intersection in the entire Santa Clarita Valley, they were removed just a few months before Wyatt left our home, with a heart and mind full of dreams for his future. Those red-light camera statistics four years worth, documented, demonstrated and proved that intersection to have more red-light runners than any other in SCV an obvious inherent design and engineering failure, four years of numbers and statistics available for our City Councill to review before removing the only deterrent at that intersection – They obviously did not read those reports before removing the Red-light cameas – they made no effort to figure out what was wrong with that intersection, instead without addressing the issues, they took that only deterrent down and our son was taken just a few months later. If only I would have known what our middle aged neighbors knew, that the intersection was so unsafe, that when drivers came running around the bend at high rates of speed, they had almost been hit in the middle of the crosswalk and instead of using that intersection, these lawful minded middle aged neighbors always j-walked a block up the street so that they could see would be red-light drivers – If only I had known, I saw so many j-walk at the same spot, always reminding our kids to never, ever, ever j-walk there or anywhere. Now in my mind, my heart, I feel guilty for not realizing what they had realized. So as a Mom, as a parent, as a friend please do not use that intersection. I feel as if I do not warn others, I would or will feel guilty if I did not share what I know to be true when someone else is hit there and another innocent life lost, maybe your son, your daughter, loved one or good, loving and loyal friend.
