Neenach arsonist David Artiaga appeared for a hearing on Monday which deliberated his placement in a mental health facility after a court found him “not fit for trial” in October.

Artiaga, 28, pled no contest to the arson charges that alleged his responsibility for a fire in July 2016 that burned over 10 acres in a remote area off Highway 138, according to Los Angeles County District Attorney officials.

Following this first phase of the trial, the court proceedings began to determine the sanity of the defendant. On Oct. 31, 2017 Artiaga was found to be “not fit for trial” by reason of insanity and the process deciding the details surrounding his placement in a mental health facility began.
Artiaga can be seen in photo by the fire taken by freelance fire photographer and Santa Clarita man Bernie Deyo, who captured the images while having dinner with a friend and noticing smoke in the sky.

After immediately informing authorities, Deyo and his friend, Jeff Zimmerman, drove toward the scene, where they saw a man — who appeared to have suffered severe burns — lighting multiple fires in the Neenach field.
The two were later recognized by the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station for documenting the reported crime.
Artiaga is scheduled to return for a continuation of his placement hearing on Feb. 26, 2018.
