“(He) is a known suspect,” said Lt. Leo Bauer with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station at the time.

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of several other charges, including felony kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon.

The California Highway Patrol was notified of the pursuit because he was headed towards the Newhall Avenue on-ramp to the southbound 14 Freeway, according to officials.

“Our deputies did a good job finding him and taking him into custody,” Bauer said. “Nobody was injured in the incident.”

Cortez is expected to return to court on Sept. 28 for a preliminary hearing.

  1. Is this going to be a poverty bail release case? I bet his attorney will pursue the option since this is what Moonbeam considers a low impact offense. Low, impact that is unless it happens to someone we love.

  2. That’s Ca for you! Kidnapp someone, rape them, run from police while endangering several other innocent lives, get probation! But if you dare use someone else’s name and you are not Hispanic you will be going to prison!!! This state is so screwed up it’s unreal!

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
